The Highway Safety & Design Section (HSD) has several units responsible for a variety of highway projects, such as the development of plans for culvert rehabilitation and ledge removal, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and new construction of roadways, provide ongoing evaluation of the need for repair, replacement and installation of pavement markings, traffic signs and safety appurtenances along state highways. They also provide traffic engineering and technical assistance to municipalities, monitor work zone traffic control compliance, provide and respond to traffic control/safety issues raised by the public and other Agency Divisions. The HSD Section also maintains the surfaces of Vermont's 3,200 two-lane miles of Interstates, State Highways, and Class I Town Highways.
